Founded in 1983, SAWS is celebrating its 31st year of existence. SAWS is a non-profit Society located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its mandate is to promote fine woodworking to the public and to raise interest in SAWS by encouraging membership.

Southern Alberta Woodworker's Society: SAWS March 16, 2016 Meeting:



SAWS will visit the Bomber Command Museum of Canada at 1659 21st Avenue in Nanton AB commencing at 7:00 p.m.

Jack McWilliam of the Calgary Mosquito Society will provide background and details on the restoration of the Calgary Mosquito Society de Havilland Mosquito.

Dave Birrell will also be on hand to provide a tour of other parts of the museum.



SAWS February 2016 

SAWS will hold our second meeting of 2016 on Wednesday February 17 commencing at 7:00 pm at Scarboro Community Centre  1727 - 14 Avenue SW.
 Neill Matheson from Lee Valley will update on the tricks and tools for sharpening chisels, plane irons and anything else with an edge.  There is no greater satisfaction than the feel of a well sharpened tool doing what you want when you want where you want.  Neil will help us all to achieve that.

SAWS January 20, 2016 Meeting

SAWS will hold the first meeting of 2016 on Wednesday January 20 commencing at 7:00 pm at Scarboro Community Centre.

As has been the case in past years January will be a show and tell session.  This is an opportunity to showcase your new tools from Christmas and the projects that you wish to brag about or the failures (if you don't have failures you are trying hard enough) you want some input on.

SAWS December meeting will be held on Wednesday the 16th commencing at 7:00 pm at Scarboro Community Hall 1727 - 14 Ave. SW.

This will be a social evening (your spouse/significant other is invited) with food & drink as well as a presentation by Dale Lowe.

SAWS November 18, 2015 Meeting

The November meeting will be held at the Manchester DI Workshop  5513 -3 St SE commencing at 7:00 pm.



Don James will be making some shavings demonstrating his expertise and sharing some tricks on the lathe.  I for one want to know how he made those wafer thin disks on his candle sticks.



Brian Graham will show off a new Martin panel saw, Biesse 3-axis CNC machine, spiral head thickness planer and a Sawstop table saw.

Mick McGowan a cabinet making instructor from SAIT will tell us about a woodworking exhibition scheduled for November 2016.


SAWS 2015 Exhibition Peoples Choice prize winner

People viewing the SAWS 2015 Exhibition and Sale at Southcentre Mall were able to cast a ballot for their favourite piece. By way of a random draw from the ballots, one lucky winner would receive a custom turning crafted by Don James expressly for the People Choice draw.  The 2015 recipient is Ermine Joseph shown here accepting her prize.






Tallying all the ballots, the piece receiving the most votes for Peoples Choice award in 2015 was the Walnut Writing Desk designed and built by Mike Mulvey.  Congrats to Mike!  A photo of Mike's desk is shown below.



SAWS October 2015 Meeting

SAWS regular monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday October 21 commencing at 7:00 pm.  We will return to Scarboro Community Hall 1727 - 14 Avenue SW for this meeting.  Our guest presenter is no stranger to SAWS, Roman Hrytsak will present his techniques and design considerations in carving wooden shoes and boots.  Charlies's Shuffle shown below was featured in our 2013 Exhibition.
